Schools and early career teachers (ECTs) across England are currently taking part in a three-year trial led by the IOP to investigate one potential route to improving physics teacher retention.

The trial looks at ways to reduce workload, particularly for teachers at the start of their careers, and examines how this might impact teacher retention.

Although recruitment for the main KEEP Teaching trial closed in July 2021, if you are a physics ECT in your first year of teaching during 2021-22 you can still contribute to the research (and receive a small incentive payment!) by participating in a one-off data collection exercise.

KEEP Teaching trial: let’s improve physics teacher retention

A key IOP aspiration is that: “Every secondary school pupil in the UK and Ireland will have access to a specialist physics teacher.”

Teaching physics is a rewarding profession and there is a recognised shortage of physics teachers. We want to increase the number of high-quality physics teachers and keep as many as we can in the profession.

The KEEP Teaching project aims to help early-career physics teachers build successful and enduring careers. The trial is looking at ways to reduce teacher workload – particularly for early career teachers. It examines how this reduced workload impacts job satisfaction and teacher efficacy, factors which show strong associations with improved teacher retention.

The findings from the KEEP Teaching trial will inform practice on effective ways to retain teachers of all three sciences, and teachers of other subjects.

What is KEEP Teaching?

KEEP Teaching is a national trial run by the IOP in England, independently evaluated by the Institute of Education at UCL, and funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and the Wellcome Trust.

Although recruitment for the main trial is now closed, if you are a physics ECT in your first year of teaching during 2021-22, you can still contribute to the research by participating in a one-off data collection exercise that will help us assess your workload.

To take part in this data collection exercise you will be:

  • a physics specialist in your first year of teaching physics (or science) in 2021-22; and
  • teaching full-time in a non-selective state school in England.
